Chinanews, Beijing, September 16 – Shanbei Village in Hunan Province is called the “Thunderbolt” Village, as 11 people there have been killed by lightning in the past two decades.
According to local villagers, lightning there often directly strike the ground, casting a fatal fireball. Not only people, many trees and houses in the village have also fallen victim to such fireballs. Hunan Lightning Protection Center sent an expert group to investigate the village, finding that it was the water in the ditches beside the terraced field and the fog that conducted the lightening to the ground. Beside, the special landform of Beishan Village also helps the form of convective cloud, which is easy to generate lightning. Hunan Provincial1 Meteorological Administration has installed a lightning rod on each house in Beishan Village, and the Provincial Meteorological Association and the Provincial Scientific Association have together donated 80,000-yuan worth of thunder arresting devices to the village. In the next a few years, the village will be absolutely free from the threat of lightning.
