Chinanews, Beijing, Oct 9 – The Beijing Wildlife Protection Center recently released seven state-level protection birds to nature at Tanghekou in Huairou District. The seven birds included one black stork1 (ciconia nigra) and six common kestrels (falco tinnunculus).
On the evening of September 18, police in Tanghekou received a report from local villagers who said that they had discovered a large injured bird. The police then passed the message to the Beijing Wildlife Protection Center. The next morning, staff members from the Beijing Wildlife Protection Center arrived at Tanghekou and recognized that the injured bird was a black stork, a first-class state-protected bird species. The doctor then gave a health check to the bird and found that its left toe and the forepart of its belly2 were slightly hurt. The black stork was then brought to the protection center. With a week’s medical treatment, its wounds were healed and the medical checks showed that its health condition had returned to normal and could be returned to nature. While releasing the black stork, the animal protectionists also released six common kestrels, a bird species classified as a second-class protection animal on the state’s list. These common kestrels were discovered at various places in Beijing about two to three months ago and were then brought to the protection center. When they were first brought there, they were still young birds. Now, all of them have become full-fledged. Tests showed that with their current flying and preying3 capabilities4, they can well survive the natural environment. Established in 2001, the Beijing Wildlife Protection Center was able to raise and provide medical treatment to various kinds of land wild animals. So far, the protection center has saved well over 8,000 wild birds of 213 species.
