Chinanews, Beijing, Dec. 16 – A survey on environmental condition in the Yangtze River estuary2 and its surrounding sea area launched by Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES) suggests that desertification in China’s seabed is worsening.
Meng Wei, head of CRAES, revealed that nearly 80 percent of seawater in an area of 38,000-sq-km maritime3 space is seriously polluted, most of which is below 4th water quality level.
Dr. Zheng Benghui, director of Environmental Research Institute of CRAES, said that two thirds of samples collected from the seabed show no creatures. State Environmental Protection Administration also launched a similar survey in 2005, and its monitoring area included 6 coastal cities in Zhejiang Province, Shanghai and areas around Hangzhou Bay, covering a land area of 103 thousand sq km and 38,000-sq-km sea area. SEPA found similar results.
