Chinanews, Beijing, Oct 19 – Mr. Wang is 50 years old this year. He is a teacher. Last year, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. All the family members were saddened by the news. Fortunately, the cancer did not deteriorate1 further. However, his wife was recently told that she had got cervix cancer.

In recent years, doctors find that there are many cases in which husband and wife both die from cancers. Averagely speaking, among every 100 couples that die, five couples might both die from cancers. The reason for this phenomenon might be because of their sharing some unhealthy living habits and having the same bad living conditions. As a result, the couple might both feel distressed2. The incidence might still be small, however doctors warn that couples should pay attention to this phenomenon, the Market News reported.

In some cases, the disease might attack the couple at the same time. In other cases, the husband and the wife might each suffer from cancers at different times. Sometimes, the couple might get the same type of cancer and at other times, the cancers that the husband and the wife might get different cancers. Whatever the case, doctors give a new name to this type of phenomenon – they call such cancer as “the couple cancer”, because both the husband and the wife suffer from the same type of disease.

In Shanghai, nearly one-third of the men that die every year die from malignant3 tumors and of all the women that die in a year, nearly one-fourth die from malignant tumors, according to a survey jointly4 carried out by the World Health Organization and Shanghai Cancer Research Cooperation Center.

Based on these figures, it is estimated that of every 100 couples that die, at least five couples will die both from cancers. In recent years, doctors find that the situation has become worse. The phenomenon is most likely to occur among couples over the age of 60. When the couples are older, the incidence of “the couple cancer” becomes higher. The reason might be because many husbands and wives have formed similar living habits – they live in the same house, have a similar diet and live in the same environment. Sometimes they might share some bad habits – they might both smoke or they both prefer to take in too much salt in their everyday meals. They might both easily feel nervous or distressed.

Sometimes, when the husband or the wife contracts cancer, their spouse5 will feel great pressure both physically6 and mentally. As a result, the immune system of their spouse will worsen and their spouse might be smitten7 with cancer in the end. For some other couples, the husband and the wife might be less considerate towards each other: they often complain about each other and quarrel with each other. In the long run, the family is full of intense atmosphere and the husband and the wife will both feel nervous by living in such a family. This might also cause the couple to suffer both from cancers, too.
