Chinanews, Hefei, Oct 23 – As the launching of Chang'e No. 1 is just around the corner, Wang Junxian, a renowned1 professor at the Center for Astrophysics at the University of Science and Technology of China, recently made a bold scientific conjecture2 about China's moon probe project, Xin'an Evening News reported.
“If we can set up a base on the moon, it will serve as a good platform for scientists to conduct more researches about the moon in future,” he said. In an interview given to this reporter, the professor listed the advantage that the moon base could bring to human research: since the earth's atmosphere is in an unstable3 condition, the astrological observation made on the earth is usually unclear. However, as the moon has no atmosphere, such astrological observations can become a lot better on the moon. The resolution and accuracy for such astrological observations can improve greatly on the moon, he said. At present, many countries want to establish an observation base on the moon, just like China. Wang predicted that China could realize its plan of setting up a scientific base on the moon in about “thirty or forty years.” “Compared with the space station that now operates on the earth’s orbit, the space station established on the moon can help scientists to conduct bigger and more complicated research work. Related maintenance work in space will also become much easier,” he noted4.
