Chinanews, Beijing, Oct 24 – According to the latest information, there are about 40,000 old trees living in Beijing, the most in China. In recent years, as Beijng's climate has turned drier and a lot of contruction work taken place in the city, some famous old trees are on the verge1 of dying, the Beijing Evening News reported.

Recently, botanists2 in Beijing plan to take some measures to improve the natural environment of Beijing so that these “living fossils” can live better.

On Monday, botanists in the 18 districts and counties in Beijing gathered at Anding Town in Daxing District. They were doing a “health check” for a gingko tree that has lived for more than 1,000 years.

The gingko tree with a large trunk needs five adults to work together to embrace it. Right now, some of its branches have become bald and there is a hole at the bottom of the trunk. Experts said that in recent years, as the weather in Beijing had become drier than before, the old tree had had a hard time for surviving. Botanists said they needed to take some measures to help the tree to live more healthily. They began to cut some dead branches off the tree and spread some fertilizer and insecticide on the leaves. The hole under the tree root was filled in. They also improved the soil conditions for the tree.

At present, Beijing has more than 40,000 old trees, with 5,000 trees being graded for first-class protection and 30,000 for second-class protection. In addition, Beijing also has some 1,000 famous trees and 100 communities of old trees. Most of these trees were planted between Liao (916-1125) and Jin (1115-1234) dynasties to Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. Some were even planted before the Tang (618-907) and Han (206BC- 220AD) dynasties, an expert at Beijing Municipal3 Gardening and Greening Bureau said.
