Chinanews, Beijing, October 26 – According to the research of Chinese scientists, a bird-flu-infected pregnant woman is able to pass the virus to the fetus1 in her womb.
The research team led by Gu Jiang, a medical expert in the Peking University, have conducted autopsy2 on two patients who died of bird flu. In their two years’ research, they found virus in many organs other than lungs, including the brain, intestines3 and trachea. One of the bodies was a young pregnant women, and virus was detected in her placenta and in the lungs of the fetus. Common flu virus can’t penetrate4 human placenta, but this case suggests that bird flu virus is quite different. The researchers believe the fetus was infected from blood circulation. The case also indicates that bird flu can spread via blood. However, no human-to-human contagion5 cases of bird flu have been reported so far.
