Chinanews, Shanghai, Nov. 11 – A person suffering from cerebral1 anoxia or cerebral ischemia should be rescued within ten minutes. Otherwise, it will be too late.
Chinese medical experts published their new research findings at the second Hypothermia Brain Conference that recently concluded in Miami, the United States. Their findings have gained wide attention in the global medical circle.
At the conference, Jiang Jirao, a professor from the Shanghai Jiaotong University's Affiliated2 Renji Hospital, delivered a report to his counterparts. He demonstrated how he could protect the monkey's brain with his profound hypothermia method.
This was the first time in the world that two Chinese medical experts (Jiang and his colleague Xu Wei, director of the neurological department at the No. 2 Affiliated hospital of Kunming Medical Science Institute), and their research team applied3 the profound hypothermia method to the brains of primates4.
In doing the experiment, the research team applied hypothermia method to a monkey's brain that had already suffered from cerebral anoxia or cerebral ischemia for ten minutes. After the brain cells had been frozen for an hour, scientists restarted to transfuse5 blood to the monkey's brain. The test showed that the money's brain could regain6 its normal status and the monkey could live a long life normally. However, in another experiment, scientists applied hypothermia method to a monkey's brain that had suffered from cerebral anoxia or cerebral ischemia for fifteen minutes. This time, a large part of the monkey's brain was badly damaged and could not come back to normal. If the monkey's brain was interrupted for twenty minutes, then all of its brain cells would be damaged.
The experiment showed that the lower the temperature, the better the effect in protecting the brain cells. When a person's body temperature is lowered from 36 degrees Celsius7 to 16 degrees Celsius, the metabolic8 system inside his brain will almost stop and the neurons inside his brain can live for a long time even without any oxygen or blood transfusion9. The brain neurons will be kept in a good condition and thus the brain system will be well protected.
The findings are significant in that it may indicate that the brain cells of humans may only survive for ten minutes at most under a cerebral anoxia or cerebral ischemia condition, Jiang said.
