Chinanews, Chengdu, November 14 – According to the Giant Panda Protection and Research Center, the researchers there are planning the 2nd giant panda feralization mission, which will help giant pandas to come back to the wild.
The mission will consist of 3 phases. The first will be the selection of the 4 most healthy and swift pandas of all those currently living in the center. In the second phase, the 4 selected pandas will be put into a feralization training ground, where they will learn the basic skills that will help them survive the harsh environment in the wild in the next 4 years. In the third phase, they will be released to the wild. However, the detailed1 release plan is yet to be confirmed. The possible plans include one for releasing a micro community of female pandas. The first feralization mission was conducted in 2003, in which Xiangxiang, a male panda was released to the wild after 3 years of training. However, last February, Xiangxiang was killed in a fight with wild pandas, when it fell off a high cliff. The 2nd mission will of course be undertaken under careful supervision2. The researchers won’t stop short of their goal of sending pandas back to nature – a goal to attain3 which China has put so much energy in protecting this rare species.
