Chinanews, Yichang, December 3 – Zhang Shuguang, deputy chief engineer of the China Three Gorges1 Project Corporation, said that there was no cause to worry about the shallow cracks on the surface concrete of the Three Gorges Dam.
Currently, the reporters of more than 20 international media are gathering2 news in the reservoir area. Zhang said this in front of the reporters on the dam. According to Zhang, the shallow cracks were caused by temperature and humidity changes, and no cracks are longer than 3 meters, not to mention that they are only several millimeters deep. All the cracks can be filled by liquid concrete, and they will pose no threat to the dam. “The dam is as impregnable as the strongest castle one can ever imagine, as it is designed to survive level-7 earthquakes on the Richter Scale, and none of the earthquakes that has occurred in the Three Gorges Area was stronger than level-6 on the Richter Scale,” said Zhang. Currently, 19 generators3 on both sides of the dam have been put in operation, which will generate a total of 13.4 million kw of electricity every year, making the Three Gorges Dam the biggest hydro-power station in the world. When completed, the Three Gorges Project will generate 22.55 million kw of electricity every year.
