Chinanews, Beijing, December 14 – China announced that the first cloned transgenic rabbit in the world had survived for more than three months. According to the identification result published in Shanghai, exogenous green fluorescent1 protein has been found in the cells of the rabbit, which proves that it is a cloned transgenic rabbit.
The researchers of Shanghai Xinhua Hospital have spent a year to build transgenic rabbit cells and to clone a complete individual rabbit according to the modified genetic2 information in such cells. The cloned baby rabbit was born on September 14, 2007. It will serve as a model for the cloning of rabbits. The next goal of the researchers will be the combination of different exogenous genes3, and the transfiguration of functional4 genes.
