Chinanews, Hangzhou, Dec. 26 – China has started the second phase of the moon probe project. However, at present, there is no definite plan as when China will send man to land on the moon, said Ye Peijian, chief designer of Chang'e No. 1 moon probe satellite.

He made the statement in a speech, titled "Chang'e No. 1 and the Deep Space Exploration", given at the Zhejiang Institute of Science and Technology recently.

At the meeting, Ye donated the latest pictures taken by Chang'e No.1 to the Zhejiang Institute of Science and Technology. All these pictures have not been published yet. The pictures include the first 3D image of the moon, the first bar image, some pictures about craters1 on the moon and several plane maps taken on and above the moon.

China had finished the first phase of its moon probe project, in which China sent a satellite to orbit around the moon. During the second phase, China will try to let Chang'e No. 1 land on the surface of the moon. It will send Chang'e No. 1 directly to the earth-to-moon transfer orbit during the launching period, which will be a bit different from the launching process in the first phase, Ye said.

At present, scientists are trying to overcome a series of technological2 obstacles that might emerge during the second launch. These obstacles include how to let the celestial3 body take a soft landing outside the earth, how to make it cruise on the surface of the moon and how to make it work at night, etc. During the second stage, China will make some moon landing and cruising devices, and set up a deep space exploration station on the moon. The moon landing device will “land” on the moon and release a small rover to cruise on the moon surface. During the second stage, scientists will mainly explore the main features of the moon and its geological structures. Scientists will also investigate the elements lying on the surface of the moon and how these elements can be utilized4 by human beings. In addition, scientists will also conduct a research on the moon's internal structure and the space environment between the sun, the earth and the moon. The second phase of the moon exploration project will be completed before 2015, the chief designer Ye Peijian noted5.
