Chinanews, Zhengzhou, January 26 – The ruins of the old Shamen City were recovered in Henan Province. An important ferry crossing on the Yellow River, with the name of Yanjin, used to be located here. However, it became deserted1 in the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty, when the Yellow River changed its course. Eventually, Shamen City and Yanjin Ferry were submerged in the floodwaters.
Shamen was also where the regional government was located. Various cultural relics2 recovered in the ruins, tell people nowadays about its prime time in the past. Archaeologists also appreciate precious information about the economy and life of the Jin Dynasty that the ruins might unfold. The excavation3 started in last August. Currently, the general layout of the city has been revealed, and houses, wells, city walls, farms, etc, have been discovered, together with uncountable cultural relics. Interestingly, the city is ladder-shaped, as it is wider in the south end.
