No legacy1 is so rich as honesty. A little government and a little luck are necessary in life, but only a fool trusts either of them. Children have more need of models than critics. The length of your education is less important than it's breadth2, and the length of your life is less important than it's depth. Always give a hundred percent, and you'll never have to second guess yourself. Learn to say no. It will be of more use to you than to be able to read Latin3. If I had my life to live over again, I would make it a rule to read some poetry and listen to some music at least once every week. I have found the best way to give advice to your children is to find out what they want and then advise them to do it. Spoon-feeding in the long run teaches us nothing but the shape of the spoon. You've got to learn to survive a defeat. That's when you develop character. The primary purpose of education is not to teach you to earn your bread, but to make every mouthful sweeter. Genius without education is like silver in mine. People who cannot find time for recreation are obliged4 sooner or later to find time for illness. The one real object of education is to have a man in the condition of continually5 asking questions. To be able to be caught up into the world of thougth---that is to be educated. I have only one life and it's short enough, why waste it on things I don't want most? Leave virtue6 and kindness to your children instead of property --- only this can bring happiness to them.
