Sulley jumped down into a gulley, evading1 the camp rangers2' f lashlights. He fought his way through some thick brush. Finally, he looked around and saw that he was by a lake. And there, sitting alone on the bank, was Mike.
"Mike!" Sulley gasped3. Mike didn't look up. "Come on, buddy," Sulley said. "Let's get you out of here."
But Mike just silently stared at the water. Sulley could see he was hurting. "Mike?" Sulley said with a sigh. "This is all my fault. I'm sorry."
Mike shook his head in despair. "You were right. They weren't scared of me. I did everything right. I wanted it more than anyone. And I thought if I wanted it enough, I could show everybody that Mike Wazowski is something special. But I'm just not." Mike regarded his reflection in the lake.
"Look, Mike, I know how you feel," Sulley said.
Mike suddenly stood up. "Don't do that. Please don't do that. You do NOT know how I feel!" His voice began to rise. "You'll never know what it's like to fail, because you were born a Sullivan!"
"Yeah, I'm a Sullivan," Sulley answered. "I'm the Sullivan who flunked4 every test and got kicked out of the program. I was so afraid to let everyone down that I cheated and lied." He sighed. "Yeah, I'll never know how you feel, but you're not the only failure here." He sighed. "I'm scary, Mike, but most of the time ... I'm terrified."
"How come you never told me that before?" Mike asked, seeing Sulley in a whole dif ferent way.
Just then, flashlights f lickered through the trees. Mike and Sulley heard dogs barking. Mike hid behind a bush as a f lashlight grazed over Sulley. "This way!" one of the rangers shouted as Sulley took of f. The rangers were close behind.
Fleeing, Sulley tried to climb up a slippery hill. The f lashlights were getting closer. Mike appeared at the top of the steep hill. He lowered a tree limb over the side and helped Sulley climb to the top.
Together, Mike and Sulley raced through the dark woods and back into the cabin. But when they opened the closet door, all they saw were brooms and buckets.
"No!" Mike cried. They had lost access to the monster world.
