Cameron Diaz has been named as the star best suited to reprise the role of singing nun¹ Maria in enduring musical The Sound of Music--by the film's original star.

Dame² Julie Andrews tipped the blonde actress as her replacement³ at a question and answer session marking the movie's 40th anniversary.

The pair became friends while providing the voices for animated⁴ characters Queen Lillian and Princess Fiona in Shrek 3, and Andrews has no doubt that, if picked for the convent hell raiser role, Diaz's career would receive a huge boost.

She says of her own casting in 1965: "There are hundreds of other ladies who sing just as well or better than I do and I was the lucky one who got asked."
