本着“最危险的地方也最安全”， Szpilman的朋友把他安排在德军驻军区。在德军突击检查时，一男子跳楼自杀。被Szpilman 看见了，他非常难过。这时候 Janina 给他送食物来了。            JANINA：No one thought they'd hold out so long. SZPILMAN：should never have come out. I  should've stayed there, fought with them.JANINA： Wladek, stop that. It's over now.  Just be proud it happened. My God, did they put up a fight.SZPILMAN：Yes, so did the Germans. JANINA：They're in shock. They didn't expect  it. Nobody expected it. Jews fighting back? Who'd have thought? SZPILMAN：Yes, but what good did it do? JANINA：What good? Wladek, I'm surprised at you. They died with  dignity, that's what good it did. And you  know something else?  Now the Poles will rise. We're ready. We'll fight, too. You'll see.重点：1. “hold out” 意思是坚持，维持2.“should never have come out”省略了主语“I”，“come out”省略了宾语“of the prison".3.“put up a fight”意思是奋勇抵抗。4.“Who'd have thought”谁会这么想，谁都没有想到犹太人会反抗。5.“but what good did it do”此刻的Szpilman长期藏匿在此，又看到了刚才的悲惨一幕，心里非常消极，他说：“反抗又有什么用呢？”Janina听到她这么说心里大吃一惊，她同情Szpilman的想法，鼓励他波兰人民在奋勇抗战，甚至有的人以钢琴家的名义募捐到很多钱。不幸的是Janina夫妇后来也被法西斯杀害。
