Where is the father?

　　　 Two brothers were looking at some beautiful paintings².

　　　 "Look," said³ the elder⁴ brother. "How nice these paintings are!"

　　　 "Yes," said the younger⁵, "but in all these paintings there is only the mother and the children. Where is the father?"

　　　 The elder brother thought⁶ for a moment and then explained⁷, "Obviously⁸ he was⁹ painting¹ the pictures."
