He didn't have enough money to get the bus there on a regular basis so he gave up after one session¹. To make things worse, he got mugged on the way home and lost his watch! Ronaldo remain stayed at Sao Cristovao but his performance was so well that he earned a call-up to Brazil's under 17 side for the South American championships in Colombia in feb 1993. Ronaldo became the leading scorer with 8 goals, and that made Ronaldo being asked to join the first division² club, Cruzeiro, in March 1993 for ￡30000. His mother could now stop working.

In the Brazilian national championship, Ronaldo scored 49 goals in his first 50 professional games. (Pele only managed 41) including a record 5 in 1 game.

Owing⁴ to his fantastic performance, Ronaldo got the call-up to the full Brazil national squad⁵. He made his first debut⁶ as a sub against Argentina for Bebeto on March 23, 1994. Coach Zagallo said: 'Pay attention to this kid. He's going to be the next Pele.' Though Ronaldo didn't play during the finals, he still attracted a lot of attention. He agreed to transfer⁷ to PSV Eindhoven of Holland for ￡4m! After the World Cup 94, Ronaldo moved to Holland. The Dutch was given a painful beginning from him. He bumped⁸ his head on a door at Amsterdam airport! Ronaldo promised lots of goals for PSV when he was the first time in front of the press in Dutch. He kept it at last and scored 30 goals in 34 games, which also lead him to become the leading scorer.

In almost the whole second season in PSV, Ronaldo was at rest. He got his knee injured in autumn 1995.

He scored a fantastic goal against England at Wembley. Brazil was the winner of the tournament. In the summer, Ronaldo was called-up as a substitute¹² for Brazil in the Copa America in Uruguay. He only participated in the opening match against Ecuador
