Chinanews, Kunming, August 10 – Currently, there are 84 corrupt1 Yunnan officials hiding abroad, although Hu Xing, the former vice2 director of the Yunnan Provincial3 Department of Communications, had been caught and extradited to China.

The borderline of Yunnan Province is 4,060 km long, and there are 27 towns and cities along the borderline, including 10 national ports and 10 provincial ports. There are also 20-plus highways and 93 trails leading to other countries. Thus it is easy for corrupt officials to escape to other countries.

According to the Anti-corruption Administration of Yunnan Provincial People’s Procuratorate, corrupted4 officials involved in small amounts of bribes5 and those at lower positions mostly had escaped to neighboring countries like Vietnam, Thailand, etc, while those at higher positions or involved in large amounts of bribes to developed countries like the US, Canada and Australia. Many of them first hid in small countries or Hong Kong, where it is easy to get visas of developed countries.

At present, more than 4,000 corrupt Chinese officials have fled abroad, taking at least $50 billion with them.
