Chinanews, Beijing, Sept 18 – China and Russia have moved a step forward in the boundary survey work at Heixiazi Island. The two countries have basically finished the boundary survey of the land area at Heixiazi Island and are shifting their attention to surveying and delimiting the boundary line in the water area near the island. According to the Sino-Russian Joint1 Statement signed last March, about half of the territory in Heixiazi Island will be returned to China after the two countries finish the boundary line delimitation.
Recently, a reporter from Shanghai-based Wen Hui Bao took a boat to travel to Heixiazi Island in Wuyuan County, Heilongjiang. The reporter saw that land boundary markers had already been placed in the southern tip of the island. These boundary markers were placed by both the Chinese and Russian workers after they had finished the land boundary surveying work, said an insider. Heixiazi Island has a total area of 327 square kilometers. After China and Russia finished the boundary survey work, about 172 square kilometers of land area will belong to China, which accounts for over half of the total land area in Heixiazi. At present, Chinese and Russian workers are being engaged in the survey of the water area near the island. They will try to decide which water area belongs to China and which belongs to Russia. Workers will also locate the center line for the navigation channel. The work will be finished by the end of November at the latest, when most of the rivers in the northern region begin to freeze. After finishing the boundary survey work, China and Russia will, by abiding2 by the principles of mutual3 benefit and win-win solutions, work together to try to develop Heixiaji into a border trade zone between the two countries. At present, merchants from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea have expressed their interest in exploring the potential business opportunities in Heixiazi Island.
