“Whether” 多用来提出一件事情的两种或者多种可能性；“if” 多用来说明事情发生的条件。在名词性从句中，“if” 也可以提出两种可能性，表示 “是否” 的意思。“Whether” 和 “if” 在这类句型中的意思相同，所以它们的用法很容易被混淆。下面，我们会着重讲解当 “whether” 和 “if” 在名词性从句中表示 “是否” 的意思时，两个词的用法区别。

 

在对比 “whether” 和 “if” 的不同点前，我们先来温习一下它们的相同点。在表示疑问和转述问题的名词性从句中，也就是从句在句子当中充当名词性成分的时候，连词 “whether” 和 “if” 通常可以互换。当然这也有例外，我们会在稍后的节目中为大家补充讲解。

 

虽然在名词性从句当中，“whether” 和 “if” 可以互换，但从正式的程度来看，“whether” 更正式，而 “if” 则更多地用在口语当中。请先来听两个例句，分别使用了 “whether” 和 “if”，两句话的意思相同。

I don't know whether Ling is still coming to dinner tonight.

（我不知道玲今晚上还来不来吃饭。）

 

I don't know if Ling is still coming to dinner tonight.

（我不知道玲今晚上还来不来吃饭。）

 

在这两个例句中，由 “whether” 和 “if” 引导的名词性从句都表示今晚玲来吃饭有两个可能性：一是 “来”，二是 “不来”。

 

但是，在用连接词 “whether” 和 “if” 引导名词性从句的时候，也有不能互换的情况。当 “whether” 和 “if” 表示 “是否” 的意思时，只能用 “whether”，不能用 “if” 的情况有几个。第一个是：“whether or not” 后面可以直接跟从句，或分开来将从句放在 “whether” 和 “or not” 的中间；而 “if” 后面只能先跟从句，再接 “or not”。请听三个例句。

I'm not sure whether or not you're telling the truth.

（我不确定你是否在说实话。）

 

I'm not sure if you're telling the truth or not.

（我不确定你是否在说实话。）

 

I'm not sure whether you're telling the truth or not.

在名词性从句中，第二个只能用 “whether” 的情况是：在表达一个计划的两种可能性的时候，“whether” 的后面可以直接加不定式 “to do”，但 “if” 不可以。请听一个例句，句子中用 “whether to do” 的结构提出了一所学校计划翻修教学楼的两种可能性。

 

Example

The school board will meet to decide whether to renovate¹ the teaching building.

（校董会将开会决定是否翻修教学楼。）

 

在这句话中，不能用 “if” 来直接替换 “whether”。如果要用 “if” 来表达同样的意思，就需要将句子改成这样：The school board will meet to decide if they're going to renovate the teaching building. 这里，“if” 后面引导完整的名词性从句，而不能接 “to do”。

 

下面来看在名词性从句当中，“whether” 和 “if” 不能互换的第三个情况：我们多用 “whether”，而不是 “if”，来引导主语、表语和同位语从句，表示 “是否” 的意思。我们来举三个例子。第一个例句是主语从句：“Whether you come or not doesn't matter.” 这句话的意思是：“你来不来不重要。”

 

第二个例子是表语从句：“The question is whether you're coming or not. ” 这句话的意思是：“问题在于你来不来。”

 

第三个例子是同位语从句：“The question whether you come or not doesn't matter.” 这句话的意思又是：“关于你来还是不来的问题并不重要。”

 

在刚刚听到的三类名词性从句当中，我们更多地用 “whether” 来表示 “是否” 的意思，而不用 “if”。

 

下面，我们再来补充一种情况：在状语从句中，只能用 “whether…or… ” 来表示 “无论……都……” 或者 “不管……还能……” 的意思。我们来听两个用 “whether…or…” 来表示 “不管……还……” 的例句。

Whether my dog likes it or not, I'm going to take him to the vet². He hasn't eaten for two days!

（不管我的狗愿不愿意，我都要带它去兽医那里看病。它这两天什么东西都没吃！）

 

We're going to have a great time throughout the championship whether we win or not!

（在冠军联赛中我们将会度过一段美好的时光，无论输赢！）

 

在第一个状语从句当中，“whether…or…” 强调 “不论我的狗愿不愿意，我都要带它去看病”。Whether my dog likes it or not, I'm going to take him to the vet.

 

在第二个状语从句当中，“whether…or…” 强调 “不管是输是赢，我们都会度过美好的时光”。We're going to have a great time throughout the championship whether we win or not!

 

好了，在以上的讲解中，我们重点对比了连接词 “whether” 和 “if” 在名词性从句中的相同点和区别。首先，在表示疑问和转述问题的名词性从句中，“whether” 和 “if” 可以互换，两个连接词都表示 “是否” 的意思，但 “whether” 的正式程度要高于 “if”。
