    The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has just approved the relaxation¹ of the rules for the introduction of new Top-Level Domains—a move that could drastically change the Internet. The new decision will allow companies to register their brands as generic³ top-level domain² names (TLDs).

    上述报道中，Top-Level Domains就是“顶级域名”，简称TLDs，顶级域名指的是网址的后缀，一般都用来表示网站代表的地域或者类别，例如通用域名.com代表商业类，..org代表非营利性组织等等。TLDs一般分为gTLDs（generic Top-Level Domains）“通用顶级域名”，如.com, .edu, .gov等，以及ccTLDs（country code Top-Level Domains）“国家及地区代码顶级域名”，如.cn, .uk, .fr等。
