A grand gathering¹ marking the 90th anniversary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) was being held at the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing Friday morning.

上文报道中的grand gathering就是“大会”，指的是盛大的会议，也可称之为“盛会”。这种会议通常比较隆重，规模大，内容重要，有纪念意义。可以表示“大会”的还有conference，assembly，convention等词。

convention一般侧重指某一政党或团体为某一特殊目的而召开的会议，也可指学术团体的年会；conference指的是通常持续几天的大型会议、研讨会；assembly指的是集会，通常有许多人参加，是计划好的、为某一特殊目的而召集的会议。
