Chinanews, Beijing, May 22 - On May 16, a delegation1 of 100 members from the Yale University of the US arrived in Beijing, on the invitation of All-China Youth Federation2 and All China Students Federation. Richard Levin, the president of Yale University, is the leader of the delegation. They will visit Beijing, Shanghai and Xi'an in the next 9 days.
Lara, a Yale freshman3, asked the reporter of the People's Daily to take a picture of her and a cartoon portrait in her hand, under the white marble steps of the Forbidden City. "This is the portrait of my boyfriend, and I am sorry he can't come," said Lara, a breeze ruffling4 her hair and the portrait."So I want to take pictures with his portrait in all the scenic5 spot in the journey." Lara had been expecting her journey to China for long. Actually, like Lara, many young Americans are interested in China, but their knowledge about this country is nothing but China Towns, kungfu, and Chinese restaurants. A seminar was held in Peking University, the topic being "on globalization". Hill, who came to China for the first time, offered a vivid example of globalization: "There are McDonald's everywhere in Beijing". "American values are being spread by American movies, American literatures and even American food," said a Chinese student. "They are impacting the culture and values of other countries." "Instead of American impact, I would call it a mutual6 communication," said Hill. "Take my journey in China as an example, it helps me to appreciate cultural diversity better, as every culture is an irreplaceable heritage of human wisdom." The seminar was conducted in English, which really brought an "impact" on American students, for they didn't expect Chinese students to speak such good English. "It is also the result of globalization, but I still prefer to speak Chinese," joked a Chinese student. On May 19, the delegation went to the Badaling Great Wall. Shi Lijia (her Chinese name), a student of the Chinese Department of Yale University, was deeply impressed. "I have felt the pulse of the Great Wall, for it is so close to me," said she. The delegation went to the statue of Zhan Tianyou at the foot of the Badaling Mountain after climbing the Great Wall. Zhan was an old Yale alumnus, who graduated more than 100 years ago. "Zhan and I share similar experiences, for both of us had been to a foreign country to study, and he has always served as a source of inspiration for me," said Shi, who had studied Chinese in China for 8 months. The grandson of Zhan Tianyou, Zhan Tongji, was invited to Badaling that day. "Your grandfather was a great man, and a common pride of all of us," said Levin, while holding the hand of Zhan Tongji firmly.
