Chinanews, Kunming, March 1 – According to staff members in Kunming Municipal Health Administration, 5,970 HIV-infected patients have been confirmed by the end of 2006, and the disease has started to haunt ordinary citizens rather than so-called “high-risk groups”.
About 60% of HIV-infected patients have got the disease through sharing syringes to inject drugs, and about 10% through unprotected sex. Another 30% are not sure how they were infected. Obviously, drug-taking injection remains1 the major mode of the spread of AIDS in Kunming. The first case of AIDS in Kunming (an American traveler) was found in 1987, and the incidence of AIDS remained low before 1995. In 1998, AIDS cases were found almost in all the districts and counties of Kunming, while by the end of 2005, 4,615 cases were confirmed.
