Chinanews, Beijing, Mar1. 12 – The Three Gorges2 Project has been completed ahead of schedule and has generated 43 billion kilowatt3-hours (KWH) electricity so far, said Peng Qiyou, head of the Science and Technology Committee of the China Three Gorges Project Corporation.
If one kilowatt hour is sold for 0.25 yuan, then the electricity produced by the project so far should be worth more than 10 billion yuan, he said. The Three Gorges Project has two power plants, one at the left bank and the other at the right bank. The project contains 26 large generating units with a total installed capacity of 18.20 million kilowatts4, which can generate 84.7 billion KWH of electricity every year. Its total installed capacity is now the largest in the world. On July 10, 2003, the first generating unit at the left-bank plant started to generate power. By November, the first batch5 of four generating units at the left bank were put into operation. On September 16, 2005, all the 14 generating units at the left-bank plant started operations, one year ahead of schedule. Construction of the Three Gorges Project was completed in advance and according to Peng, the project had brought great benefits since it was put to work in 2003. The whole project was originally set to be completed by 2009. Based on the current work pace, it bids far to be finished one year ahead of schedule. The power plant at the right bank will probably be put into operation in 2008. By then, the Three Gorges Project will be able to produce 84.7 billion KWH electricity annually6, with an output value of over 20 billion yuan. The Three Gorges Project was kicked off in December 1994 and the Three Gorges Dam was completed in May 2006. The project involves an estimated total investment of 180 billion yuan.
