Chinanews, Beijing, April 5 - "Some 2,400 planes have been prepared to control US white moths1 in Hebei and Beijing, in order to guarantee the 'Green Olympics' in 2008," said Wei Diansheng, the director of the Afforestation Division of the State Forestry2 Administration.
US white moths have been haunting China in the past few years, and the warm winters have only made the situation worse. According to a survey by the end of 2005, about 385,480 acres of land in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and Liaoning suffered from US white moths, and some 164,700 acres of land there were added in 2006. Thanks to the hard work of farmers and local forestry administrative3 personel, US white moths have not caused disasters to China. It is estimated that US white moths will spread to over 667,000 acres of land in the four provinces and municipalities. Beijing Municipal Forestry Division will try their best to hold the pests at bay. They promise that there will be no US white moths found in downtown Beijing, particularly during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
