China to compile biographies for famous Chinese scientists

Chinanews, Beijing, April 6 - China is planning to write the biographies of some 6,000 famous Chinese scientists and scholars, which will be completed before the end of the 11th Five-Year Plan Period (2006-2010).

 

This project will be supported by the whole nation, with the title of "A Brief Introduction to the Achievements of Chinese Scientists in the 20th Century". Qian Weichang, the famous Chinese physicist1, will be in charge of the project, which will include books, multi-media E-books and online database. It is estimated that the project will contain articles of some 40 million Chinese characters.

 

There will be 20 volumes of the book, which will be divided into the 3 categories of natural science, technology and and social science.

 

Actually, Qian handed in the plan of the project in March, 2004, under the authorization2 of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. By the end of 2006, the Chinese government finally approved the plan and the initial fund was allocated3 at the same time. The project will start very soon.
