Chinanews, Xi'an, April 11 - Shaanxi launched a general investigation1 on the 1,700-km-plus part of the Great Wall located in the province, to check the location, building scale, date and protection statues of the Wall.
This is the first time for Shaanxi to do so. It will take more than 2 years to complete the investigation, covering sections built between the Warring States Period (475 BC - 221 BC) and the Ming Dynasty (1368 AD - 1644 AD). The result of the survey will be used to make regulations on the protection of the Great Wall. The Great Wall refers to a series of military defense2 project built in ancient China, with its beginning in the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC - 476 BC), and the latest part built in the Ming Dynasty. Currently, its ruins and sites can be found in severl provinces, autonomous3 regions and municipalities in northern and northwestern China. In 2005, a "Great Wall Protection Project" was kicked off, and Shaanxi Province has borne a very active part in it since then.
