Chinanews, Beijing, May 22 - Orchid1 has never been more popular in China as it is today. According to a report by CCTV, nowadays the price of a precious orchid can be hundreds of thousands of yuan, even millions. Thus large groups of florists2 have flocked to the mountains to search for orchids3.
In Heqing County, Yunnan Province, a famous orchid producer in China, there is a mountain called "Orchid Mountain", but hardly any orchids can be seen today. The CCTV reporter randomly4 interviewed some florists in Heqing, all of whom complained that it had become more and more difficult to find wild orchids, especially rare species. "It took me two days to find these two orchids, and they might be the last of their kind," said one of them. The Chinese Academy of Sciences has also released a report on the distribution of wild orchids in China, saying that the orchids in the Dabie Mountains are also dying out for excessive dredging. In the mountainous regions accessible to highways, 90% of orchids have died out. Even in steep mountains, some 30% to 50% of orchid species have fallen victim to the orchid fever in Chinese market. "There are more than 3,000 orchid species in China, but quite a lot of them can only be found in other countries today," said an expert.
