Chinanews,Shanghai, May 25 - Sino-German Psychiatric Conference, which was closed on May 23, said that at least 190 million Chinese need the help of professional psychiatrists1, but currently there are only 3,000 qualified2 psychiatrists in the country. Experts at the conference called for a widespread concern for training more psychiatrists and building more psychiatric clinics.
"Everyday at least 300 people come to our Psychological Consulting Center for help," said Xiao Zeping, the director of Shanghai Psychological Health Center. Statistics also show that more than 150 thousand Shanghainese go to psychiatric clinics every year, most being young white collars and well-educated persons. The Ministry3 of Health of China demands that hospitals at municipal level or above should be equipped with a psychiatric clinic; however, the limited number of psychiatrists has become the bottleneck4 of the project.
