Chinanews, Beijing, July 26 – China intends to build a satellite earth station on the North Pole. Construction of the station has now entered into the bidding stage, said Yang Jun, director of the China Meteorological Administration1 under the National Satellite Meteorological Center.
Yang, who is also director of the National Center for Space Weather, made the statement Tuesday at a summer course organized by the International Space University. China is the third country in the world to have obtained both polar orbit2 meteorological satellites and geostationary satellites, right after Russia and the United States. The meteorological pictures sent by Fengyun meteorological satellites and other related3 products based on these pictures have been widely used for scientific surveys, national economic development and disasters forecasts, Yang said. Currently4, China focuses more on the changes of space weather, atmosphere, land and ocean and how these factors can affect the environment. The country is also devoting more efforts to develop satellites that can send pre-warnings before natural disasters occur, Yang noted5.
