Chinanews, Guiyang, Aug 10 –China plans to survey every inch of the soil on the moon during the Chang'e project, said Ouyang Ziyuan, China's chief scientist for the moon exploration project.

He disclosed the information while attending a seminar given to young people working at various governmental institutions in Guizhou Province on Wednesday.

“China's current moon exploration project consists of three parts: flying around the moon, landing on the moon and returning from the moon,”the chief scientist said.

In the exploration stage, no astronauts will be sent to the moon. Instead, a satellite will be launched to the moon to carry out a thorough and systematic1 investigation2. After the exploration period, China will send a landing vehicle that will arrive at a specific place on the moon. In the third stage, the samples collected from the moon will be sent back to earth, Ouyang Ziyuan said.

“There are altogether 15 tons of helium-3 on earth, while on the moon, the total amount of Helium-3 can reach 1-5 million tons. Helium-3 is considered as a long-term, stable, safe, clean and cheap material for human beings to get nuclear energy through controllable nuclear fusion3 experiments. If we human beings can finally use such energy material to generate electricity, then China might need 10 tons of helium-3 every year and in the world, about 100 tons of helium-3 will be needed every year. This means that the helium-3 reserves on the moon can serve human society for at least 10,000 years,” he said.

Many of the tasks proposed in China's moon exploration project have not been tackled in the world before. For instance, China intends to survey every inch of the soil on the moon to see how many helium-3 and other materials are there in the soil. By doing so, China aims to provide the most detailed4 and reliable information about helium-3 on the moon. Such information will benefit the humankind on the earth, the chief scientist said.
