Chinanews, Chengdu, Aug 14 – At 11 o'clock on Monday, giant panda Jiaozi, which has lived in the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base for 12 years, gave birth to two giant panda babies: one male and one female. It is the first time in the world that a giant panda gave birth to two babies at a time through artificial insemination.
At 11:14 on Monday morning, Jiaozi gave birth to a female baby after having been pregnant for 104 days. The female giant panda baby weighed 131.5 grams. A half hour later, Jiaozi gave birth to a male baby, weighing 116 grams. This is the fifth time for Jiaozi to give birth to babies. She bore her first baby in 2001. On May 1-2, Jiaozi tried to mate with a male giant panda by herself. However, her attempt became futile1 in the end. After that, scientists applied2 artificial insemination method to Jiaozi three times. Jiaozi finally got pregnant, an expert at the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base told this reporter. By August 13, the giant pandas raised at the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base had successfully given birth to seven giant panda babies so far this year. The number of giant pandas raised in captivity3 has now reached 66 in Chengdu.
