Chinanews, Beijing, Aug 20 – Chinese scientists announced last Thursday that they had set the launching route for Chang'e No.1, China’s first moon satellite.

According to their plan, the whole launching process will be broadcast live through national TV stations and the pictures taken by the satellite will be sent back to earth, the Beijing Times reported.

Last week, five Chinese scientists, including Hao Xifan, vice1 director of the Lunar Exploration Engineering Center of COSTIND (the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense), Sun Zezhou and Sun Huixian, both deputy chief architects of the lunar satellite system, Jin Zhiqiang, deputy chief designer of Changzheng 3A carrier rocket, and Li Chunlai, chief designer of the earth application system for the lunar satellite project, were invited by COSTIND website to answer the public's questions about China's lunar project.

It may take 10-12 days for Chang'e No. 1 to finish its journey to the moon. The lunar satellite, after being launched, will first fly around the earth 5-7 times on an oval orbit. Its nearest location from the earth will be 200 kilometers. The main task for Chang'e No. 1 is to conduct exploration around the moon. So once launched, it will never return to the earth. The satellite may need to change its orbits 9-10 times before it can finally fly along the designated orbit. In future, it may retrieve2 some samples from the moon, said Sun Zezhou.

In the first twenty minutes, from the time of the satellite's getting ready for ignition, to its being launched into space, and to the separation of the satellite from the rocket, Chang'e No. 1 satellite has to accomplish many flying movements and important tasks, any of which will be crucial to the success of the launch, said Jin Zhiqiang.

China's moon probe project consists of three stages: flying around the moon, landing on the moon and returning from the moon. The project is expected to be completed by 2020. As the first part of the project, China has now completed the designing and production work for Chang'e No. 1 satellite and Changzhen 3A carrier rocket. Chang'e No. 1 moon satellite has recently passed the assessment3 test for its production work. It is now ready for the launch.
