Chinanews, Shanghai, Sept. 21 – A recent survey shows that in China, about 1% of the children are short in stature1. In Shanghai, the five major children's hospitals have received 2,500 children with a short stature problem and 90% of them show such mental problems as depression or lack of confidence. Among the children that are short in stature, 52.05% suffer from depression. Experts urge that parents, teachers and society should give enough attention to the depression problem among short children, the Shanghai Evening News reported.

Children who are short in stature tend to get much care from their parents. As a result, they are not as independent as other children. They are not eager to participate in team activities with the children of their age and they are not willing to make friends with other children. In the long run, they might feel depressed2 and show less than their peers3, said Shen Yongnian, a medical expert at Shanghai Children's Medical Center who excels4 at endocrine system study.

Children who are short in stature often feel depressed and they might show some abnormalities in their character. This might result in psychological depression on their part. When these children become adults, they might be placed in a disadvantaged position in schools, in the job market or in their marriage issue. Sometimes they might feel discriminated5 against in society. Society should give enough attention to their psychological problems in these aspects, said Shan Yuming, a doctor studying human endocrine system at Huashan Hospital.
