Chinanews, Beijing, Nov. 16 – November 14 is the World Diabetes1 Day. In Beijing, there are about 700,000 people that have diabetes. In order to control the disease, the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau urges diabetes patients to control their food intake2 and do more exercises. However, to these patients, the most effective way to cure the disease is not taking medicines or relying on any advanced devices, but to take more exercises. Recently, some experts suggest that if a diabetic can walk at a pace of 120 steps per minute, they will be able to control their blood sugar level.
It is estimated that in 2007, about 60 million people in China suffer from diabetes and the number is still increasing by 1.2 million every year. In Beijing alone, there are about 700,000 people who suffer from diabetes. The chance of death for diabetics will be 11 times higher than non-diabetics. Currently, diabetes is said to be the fifth largest killer3 for Chinese urbanites. In addition to the high death rate, the chance for diabetics to be contracted with cardiovascular disease will be two to four times higher than those who do not have such disease and their chance to suffer from stroke, uraemia, and blindness will be 2.5 times, 17 times, and 25 times higher, respectively, than people free from those ailments4.
On the World Diabetes Day, the Beijing Star Daily and the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau jointly5 organized an event, in which both the public media and local government urged Beijing citizens to control their food intake and do more exercises. The event organizers hopes that by dint6 of these concrete actions Beijing citizens can display a healthy image to the whole world.
