Experts showed the artificial skin on Monday, December 17, 2007. |
Chinanews, Xi'an, December 19 – The dental hospital of the PLA No.4 Medical University announced on December 17 in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province that the first piece of artificial skin made in China had been put in clinical use recently.
The artificial skin does not only look and feel like real skin, it also has similar structures to real skin, and is highly compatible with a patient's body, as it contains live cells from the patient. It requires only a small piece of skin the size of a fingernail to produce a large piece of artificial skin in a factory. Doctors only need to put the artificial skin of a proper size on the affected1 part of the patient's body, and it will well blend with the healthy tissues, and eventually be replaced by the latter.
By the end of 2004, China had conducted 300 clinical tests on the reliability2 of the artificial skin, and the result was very satisfactory. It will benefit more patients in the world, as it can be easily produced and its cost is relatively3 low.
