Chinanews, Beijing, December 21 – The China Marrow1 Donor2 Project (CMDP) was restarted in 2001. So far, more than 700,000 people have voluntarily joined the project, and 60% of patients who need hematopoietic stem cell transplantation could find donors3 that were matchable in the initial test.
By now, 800-odd successful hematopoitic stem cell transplantations have been conducted in China, including 34 patients from the US, UK, Switzerland, Singapore, Afghanistan, South Korea, Hong Kong SAR, and Taiwan. Though the CMDP has collected the information of 700,000 donors, it is quite limited compared with the large Chinese population. The China Red Cross Society plans to enlist4 1 million donors before 2010.
