Chinanews, Hong Kong, Feb. 12 – China will rise to become the world’s biggest cartoon consumption market over the next ten years. In the next two to three years, cartoon industry will grow by 110% year on year, creating a market worth 700 billion yuan. The number of cartoon programs made in recent years has soared in the mainland, many new cartoon images are created and improvement has been made in every chain of the cartoon industry, said Su Yongle, chairman of Creative Power Entertaining, a cartoon production company based in Guangdong, reported by the Hong Kong-based Economic Weekly.
At present, Chinese television stations are required to broadcast Chinese original cartoon programs at prime time. However, demand for such programs always falls short of supply. Currently, China has 2,000 local TV stations at provincial1 or municipal level. Among them there are four animation2 TV channels and 25 TV channels for children and the youth. They produce 289 children’s programs and 200 animation programs, and the market demand for these programs amounts to 260,000 minutes every year. However, only 20,000 minutes of new programs are made every year. Apart from TV programs, demand for books and videos made for children is estimated to have a market value of 10 billion yuan a year, while demand for children's clothes, toys, stationary3, and food is estimated to generate a market value of 90 billion yuan, 20 billion yuan, 60 billion yuan and 35 billion yuan a year, respectively.
Statistics show that by the end of 2006, there were 5,473 companies in China that worked in the animation industry, 447 colleges or universities had set up animation as their major and 466,000 students had been studying animation as their major in colleges.
