Of those 450 million real-name registered Alipay users, mobile payments account for 71% of their total payments, with people born in the 1980s and 1990s becoming the main groups, according to the data released by Alipay on January 4th.

In 2015, only 65% of the total bills on Alipay were paid via mobile app. The newly released data shows that young people born in the 1990s pay 91% of their bills through mobile phones, reports People's Daily Online.
 
Meanwhile, Tibet, followed by Qinghai Province and Gansu Province in northwest China, ranks first for mobile payments market penetration1, reaching 90%. 
 
From the view of total amounts paid by Alipay in 2016, Guangdong Province takes first place, accounting2 for 16% of the national total. Then come Zhejiang and Jiangsu Provinces.
 
Further, the average payment amount for people in Shanghai reached 148 thousand yuan (USD 21,503), followed by Zhejiang Province, Beijing, Fujian Province and Jiangsu Province, which all have exceeded 100 thousand yuan(USD 14,535). In 2016, the average payment amount for those born in the 1980s has exceeded 120 thousand yuan(USD 17,453).
 
Also, Chinese people are starting to care more about efficiency. In 2016, over a billion people enjoyed the convenience of Alipay by paying utility bills, traffic violation3 fines, as well as buying subway, bus, train tickets, movie tickets and so on. People in as many as 357 cities in China, 54% of the total, are able to enjoy these extra bill paying and extra app services, as People's Daily Online reported.
