Chinanews, Shanghai, Mar1. 23 – The first batch2 of coastal3 cities opened to the outside world continue to make significant contribution to the national economy and help the economy to grow well and fast. Information from the National Statistics Bureau shows that in 2006, the total value of production made by these cities amounted to 4.05 trillion yuan, or 19.3% of the national total.
In May 1984, China opened the 14 coastal cities of Dalian, Qinhuangdao, Tianjin, Yantai, Qingdao, Lianyungang, Nantong, Shanghai, Ningbo, Wenzhou, Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Zhanjiang, Beihai, and the Hainan province. In 1987, Chinese government further opened Weihai city, allowing it to enjoy the same preferential policies as the other coastal cities opened previously4. These cities, together with the special economic zones of Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Shantou and Xiamen, became the frontline cities in the country's opening-up. The total economic volume of these cities vary greatly. Shanghai's production value, for example, is the highest among them, with its one trillion yuan, followed by Guangzhou, with over 600 billion yuan. The production value of Tianjin and Qingdao is 400 billion yuan and 300 billion yuan, respectively, and that of Ningbo, Dalian and Yantai all exceeds 200 billion yuan. Finally, the production value of Wenzhou, Nantong, Fuzhou, and Weihai all exceeds 100 billion yuan. In 2006, the total value of production of the first batch of open coastal cities increased by 14.1% on average, making them the major force in driving up the national economy. The actual utilization5 of foreign direct investment (FDI) among these 15 cities reached 30.4 billion US dollars in 2006, up 16.8% from the previous year and accounting6 for 43.7% of the total FDI use in the country. The growth rate of FDI use among these cities was 20.9 percentage points higher than the national average level. In 2006 in these cities, people's disposable income per capita reached 14,878 yuan, or 127% of the national average level, and an increase of 12.3% over the previous year.
