The three regions are, and will continue to be the engines to boost the national economy for the next twenty years. The city group in Shandong Peninsula includes Yantai, Weifang, Zibo, Dongying, Weihai, and Rizhao, with Jinan and Qingdao being the centers. The city group in the middle and eastern part of Liaoning Province includes Anshan, Fushun, Benxi, Dandong, Liaoyang, Yingkou, Panjin, and Tieling, with Shenyang and Dalian being the centers. The city group along the west shore of the Taiwan Strait includes Zhangzhou, Quanzhou, Putian and Ningde, with Fuzhou and Xiamen being the centers. The city group in Sichuan Province includes 14 cities including Chongqing, Chengdu, Zigong, Luzhou, Deyang, Mianyang, Suining, Neijiang, Leshan, Nanchong, Meishan, Yibin, Guang’an, Ya’an, and counties located in the West Sichuan Economic Belt, with Chongqing and Chengdu being the centers. Finally, the city group in the middle part of Shaanxi Province includes Xianyang, Baoji, Weinan, Tongchuan, and Shangzhou, with Xi’an being the center. The land area of the ten city groups accounts for 9.99% of the national territory and their population accounts for 35.02% of the total population in China. However, they contribute to 52.83% of the country’s GDP. In other words, while the ten city groups occupy less than one-tenth of the national territory, they sustain the life of more than one-third of the country’s total population and contribute to over half of China's GDP. |
