Chinanews, Urumqi, Apr. 25 – Construction of the three major railway lines in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous1 Region began on Tuesday. It is regarded as an unprecedented2 event in the local railway history. When completed, the three railway lines will form an important part that will link China to Central and West Asia, as well as to Europe.
One of the three lines goes from Urumqi to Jinghe; one from Turpan to Korla; and one from Kuytun to Beitun. The Urumqi – Jinghe part starts from the Urumqi station on Lanzhou-Urumqi railway line and goes through Changji, Shihezi, Kuytun, and Usu to Jinghe. The total length of this section will reach 382 kilometers and the total investment involved 2.7 billion yuan. The Turpan – Korla part begins from the Turpan station on Lanzhou-Urumqi railway line and travels through Toksun, Hoxud, and Yanqi to Korla, with a total length of 334 kilometers and a total investment of 8.6 billion yuan. The Kuytun – Beitun part starts from Kuytun Station on Lanzhou-Urumqi railway line and travels northwards through Karamay, Wuqia County, and Fuhai County to Beitun. The length of the newly constructed part will be 458 kilometers and investment for the construction will reach 5.5 billion yuan. The three railway lines will expand and strengthen the existing railway network in the west region and pave the way for the great future economic development in Xinjiang. They will serve as the great transportation arteries3 linking China with Central and West Asia, and Europe. Construction of the three projects will play a significant role in speeding up the railway construction in Xinjiang, promoting the reform and opening-up, and socio-economic development in Xinjiang, said Wang Lequan, Party Secretary of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region when he attended the opening ceremony held in Kuytun. Construction of the three railway projects will have a far-reaching historical and practical significance in balancing the opening both to China's interior regions and other parts of the world. The three railway lines will become a frontier for China to open to the West, said Liu Zhijun, minister of railways.
