Chinanews, Beijing, May 18 – Over the past month, many places in China, including Yunnan, Hubei, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Beijing, held many orchid1 exhibition activities. Many precious strains of orchids2 on display were sold at high prices, some for one million yuan each and some for even 10 million yuan each. It seems that the orchid speculation3 activities are heating up, CCTV international channel reported.
This reporter recently paid a visit to Yunnan, where most orchids grow in China. When the reporter arrived in Yunnan, it was raining. Despite cool weather, orchids were sold like hot cakes. Businesspeople from many part of the country came to the orchid market early in the morning despite the rain, hoping to find some rare strains. “I came from Sichuan and I have spent over 100,000 on orchids,” a Sichuan businessperson said. “I have invested more than 5 million yuan in buying orchids. I keep these orchids at home and will sell them when the price goes up. If the price doesn’t go up, I will grow them at home and bide4 my time, ” a merchant from Guizhou told this reporter. Although orchid selling price has gone down a little bit recently, prices of the valuable strains still remain high. One orchid, the Five Golden Flower, is still sold at over 100,000 yuan. Another orchid, the Phoenix5 Tail, was once sold at 4 million yuan at the auction6 market. In Yunnan, such strain is still sold at more than 2 million yuan now. For some other rare strains, it might be impossible to get one no matter how much one is willing to pay. Not only in Yunnan, in the Dabieshan mountain areas in Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou, and even Gansu, many businesspeople are speculating in orchid sales. In March this year, a precious strain was sold at 1.3 million yuan. In Wenzhou, Beijing and Zhengzhou, valuable strains, which were sold at more than 1 million yuan each, were out of stock at exhibitions. The latest information from China Orchid Association shows that over the past two months, the number of people trading in orchids increased from 3 million to 3.5 million.
