Chinanews, Beijing, July 26 – According to the announcement by the General Administration of Quality Supervision1, Inspection2 and Quarantine of China (GAQSIQ), all the 41 parrot-fever positive pigeons imported from the US have been killed.
The pigeons arrived in Beijing by air on last June 21. Local administration of quality supervision, inspection and quarantine found that the information on their health certificate was not correct, including the number, the quarantine process, etc. In the check process that followed, the pigeons were confirmed to carry parrot fever, a fatal disease to both birds and humans. The GAQSIQ has sent the case report to the Department of Agriculture of the USA, demanding it investigate where and how the pigeons were exported to China. Besides, it also sent ordered local quarantine administrations to pay special attention to the poultry3 from the US. Before the incident, the US was one of the biggest poultry suppliers to China, from which about 1.3 million domestic fowls4 were imported every year, and it was the first time for such a shocking incident to occur between the two countries.
