Chinanews, Yichang, Sept 20 – A new round of negotiations1 has started for the price of iron ore next year. Many people expect that in 2008, the price of iron ore will rise in global market. Will China's steel industry be affected2 by such price rise? According to Zhu Jimin, president of Shougang Steel Corp., the situation has begun to change now. Chinese steel industry has now gained more power in their right of speech in deciding the price of iron ore in global market.
From 1996 to 2006, Chinese steel output increased from 100 million tons to well over 400 million tons. Chinese steel output has accounted for 34% of the world's total steel production. In the meantime, China has turned from a steel importer to a major steel exporter. Nevertheless, the country's iron ore self-sufficiency rate declined from 66% in 2000 to 47% in 2005. In 2006, the situation changed a little bit. Still, China imported half of the iron ore from other countries in its steel production. For many years, Chinese steel companies had little say in deciding the price of iron ores. International iron ore suppliers kept raising the price of their product and the shipping3 fees, which served only to increase the production costs of Chinese steel.
According to Zhu, the price of iron ore was pushed up by the sufficient demand for the resource. In the past, many Chinese steel companies dealt with raw material processing. In future, as more and more Chinese steel companies merge4 with each other, some big companies which can produce large quantities of steel and at the same time obtain abundant iron ore resources to back up their production, will emerge in China. Chinese steel companies will thus gain more power in setting iron ore price. It is a fact that at present, domestic iron ore supply still can not meet steel companies' demand for it. However, it should be noted5 that China's iron ore supply can reach 200 million tons a year. At present, the Shougang Steel Corp. has also made some technological6 breakthrough in trying to make steel with iron ore that contains high phosphorus. With this technological progress, it is expected that China will be able to explore more iron ore resources at home in future.
Chinese steel companies have become more globalized today than yesterday. They have cooperated with their international counterparts in steel making, Zhu said.
Chinese steel companies have improved their position in the world. Now, the price of iron ore should not only be decided7 by big international enterprises, Chinese steel companies will also have a say in this issue, Zhu noted.
