Chinanews, Beijing, Sept 25 – A recent survey shows that in Beijing, nearly 90% of the people feel that the recent price hikes in grains, cooking oil, meat, eggs and vegetables have affected1 their daily lives greatly.
The survey was done by the Beijing Zhongguan Economic Surveying Company, a research organ under the Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Commission. More than 900 local residents took part in the survey. The survey was mostly conducted among residents living in the eight downtown districts in Beijing. In the survey, 87% of the interviewees say the price hikes in grains, cooking oil, meat, eggs and vegetables have greatly affected their lives. In addition, 36% of the respondents say housing price and the price of housing-related goods have brought about a negative influence upon their daily lives. Following these two, other items whose price change has affected people's lives include catering2, daily consumer goods, transportation fees, clothes, entertainment activities and durable3 goods. The survey shows that low-income earners are most vulnerable to the price change. In the survey, 77% of the low-income earners say the price change has affected their lives "greatly" or "fairly greatly", while 65% of the middle-income earners say so. In addition, 40% of the high-income group also admit that such price change has affected their lives to some extent. Because of the price hike, 46% of the interviewees feel their daily consumption costs have increased, 27% of them say they are put under a greater pressure in living and 21% of them think their living standards have decreased.
