Chinanews, Beijing, Nov. 5 – As the selling price of the famed Khotan jade1 soars, lots of people rush to Xinjiang from various parts of the country. They gather at the Yulong Kashi River banks and deplete2 the Khotan jade resource there. Due to this overexploitation activities, soil has been erroded and local ecological3 environment badly damaged, the Legal Daily reported.
Since Khotan jade was appraised4 as the national jade in 1999, its price has increased substantially. In Yulong Kashi River region, local people say that in the jade exploitation fever, hundreds of people earn a fortune of one million yuan a year and dozens of people even 10 million yuan a year. Hundreds of thousands of people rush to the Yulong Kashi River with their fortune dream. At the river bank, many people work year around searching for jade, selling jade or processing jade. At the height of the jade rush, about 300,000 people crowded at the river bank digging for jade. Many people became so crazy in jade digging that they looked like totally absorbed in gambling5 activities. The ever-increasing jade price has also attracted many merchants' attention. In Khotan city, many jade shops have emerged. In Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Aotunomous Region, 2,000 kilometers away from Khotan, a large jade market has formed. It is the largest market in China for Khotan jade business. By the end of 2006, there were more than 2,000 jade shops in Urumqi, 800 of them being established in 2006 alone. In 2006, many large machines emerged on the Yulong Kashi river bank to in the jade rush. At one time, about 3,000 digging machines and 200,000 people crowded in a 100-kilometers strip along the river bank, digging for jade. Such situation lasted until the Ministry6 of Land and Resources issued an order forbidding people to dig for jade in the river region. By the latter half of the year, all the digging machines had been moved out of the region. Then, local government issued a document restricting certain kinds of jade exploitation. Recently, local government carried out a special campaign to this end. However, according to a local official from the Khotan County Bureau of Land and Resources, it was too late for the government to issue these policies. At present, there are too many people come to the river bank to search for the scarce jade resources. After the government issued the above documents, there are still dozens of thousands of people on the river bank digging for jade. Also, the government's policy has helped push up the price of Khotan jade raw material, a local industrial insider said.
